Welcome to Chennai

Chennai-Gateway to the South

It hugs India’s longest sandy shores, and is home to almost 4.5 million people; a city that can guarantee a holiday of the senses, mainly visual. But Chennai’s true assets are its people, whose zest for life rubs off on any avid traveler.

Chennai boasts of a long history from the English East India Company, through the British Raj to its evolution in the late 20th century as a services and manufacturing hub for India. Not many Indians know that Chennai was once known as Fort St George, as part of the VIjayanagara Empire which based its headquarters in Andhra Pradesh. This area, or region, was a cluster of villages, of which one of them was Madrasapattinam. The region was home to merchants, traders from European communities. After India became independent in 1947, the city became the administrative and legislative capital Tamil Nadu in 1968.

Chennai, however, is the indigenous name given to Madras by the local state government after the British rule was overthrown. The city has much to offer the discerning traveler. It has the world’s longest beach, about 6 kilometers in length, called Marina Beach. As much as this theory is hard to believe, Chennai is becoming the third most important destination for settlement by expatriates after Delhi and Mumbai, thanks to its burgeoning automobile and mechanical industry.
